Frequently asked questions
'Recurring' are expenses that occur once a month for example your rent or mortgage,
gas bill, council tax, mobile phone bill. 'This months' expenses are all the other expenses
that occur during the month from your travel costs, to food shopping, to magazines you might
buy etc. You could break these costs down even more and input your daily expenses
e.g: bottle of water, crisps, newspaper, daily travel card, takeaway etc.
Walletproof is designed to help you track what you spend you're money on, regardless of how
your bank accounts are structured. Simply enter your monthly income in "Recurring income" and
your rent, water and heating bills etc. in "Recurring expenses" and your day to day expenses in
"This month's expenses". You will know how much you have left to spend, but it is up to you
to know where that money is kept, be it in a current account, savings account or under your pillow.
(Walletproof cannot officially recommend the last option).
In this instance you would not enter it into the 'recurring' section as the figure
changes each month / week and will not be an accurate account of your income. The best way
to handle this is to enter your income into the 'Income - This month' area. That way you can
enter the in-come as it occurs.
You can choose whatever categories you like. The most popular category choices of other Walletproof users are
displayed at the bottom of the form under 'Popular categories'. Your choices of categories should reflect
how precisely you want to monitor your expenses.
For example, if you just want a rough idea on where your
money is going your "month's expenses" categories could include
- Groceries
- Books
- Nightlife
If you wan't a more precise picture of your spending, your categories could include
- Milk
- Yoga books
- All Bar One (we're not affiliated with All Bar One, but they do have some mighty good tapas!)
For each category name, you can see a chart that shows you how much you've spent on that category for a given month by
clicking on the name of a category.
Click on the category name of your entry in the overview on the right. This will take you to the category page.
On the right hand side of
this screen you can edit and delete all the entries in this category.
You can have Walletproof display a category as "in the red" if you spend more
on it than you had planned by setting "goals".
To set a goal:
- Click on the category you want to set yourself a goal for.
- Type the maximum amount you want to spend this month and press enter.
To remove a goal, simply delete any text in the goal box or type 0 as your goal and the goal
will be removed.
